With warmer weather on the way, rats and mice are invading homes and gardens across the UK to breed. In search of food, warmth and nests, rodents infiltrate properties to multiply which can spell disaster. Pest infestations can be very expensive to handle, so it’s best to get ahead of them before they begin. That’s why Glen Peskett, DIY expert from Saxton Blades, has shared his top tips for keeping rodents out of your home and garden before they can set up and get out of control.
He said there is one kitchen item that you likely already have that rats absolutely hate the smell of. Glen said: “Garlic is a favourite all around the world, it smells amazing, has health benefits and transforms any dish you put it in. But for rats? That strong, pungent smell is their absolute nightmare.
“Rats rely heavily on their sense of smell to navigate and find food. Garlic, with its strong sulfur compounds, overwhelms their sense of smell and makes them feel disoriented. These compounds are also something rats associate with toxic substances, naturally deterring them from entering your home.”
To use garlic to stop rodents creeping in to your home, try placing a few cloves around the entry points in your home.
Glen said: “Remember, they’re most attracted to areas like your basements, garages, kitchens and even the loft, so ensure to place them near any cracks and doorways around the outside of your home.”
You can also use garlic oil or if garlic isn’t your style, cayenne pepper and apple cider vinegar will work too.
Soak a cotton ball in vinegar and place it in the same areas where you would have put a garlic clove.
Aside from preparing with strong scents, the other way you can make your property less desirable to pests is by keeping your home clutter-free.Rats love gathering in hidden areas to nest, so having excess clutter in your home is the perfect opportunity for them to breed.
It’s also very important to make sure you don’t keep food waste around your home. Food waste is a major attraction for rats. Keep bins tightly sealed, take them out regularly, and clean up any spills quickly.
