Mould in your home doesn’t have to be a nightmare to remove.
We all know how important it is to tackle mould as soon as you see it. The fungus thrives in damp places, making it particularly prevalent in homes in the winter when the cold temperatures meet the warmth of our heating and cause more condensation than we get in the summer months.
Leaving mould unchecked can not only cause damage to your property and make it look unsightly, but it can also be damaging to your health. Mould primarily impacts the airways and lungs, causing things like sneezing, coughing, and breathlessness.
There are a myriad of products on the shelves that claim to get rid of mould, but many will cost you a pretty penny to buy, and people are often split on their effectiveness.
But one home expert has gone viral online for sharing his helpful tips on cleaning mould – using just one common cooking ingredient that only takes an hour to work.
Neeson shared a video on TikTok in which he said you can get rid of mould in “three easy steps”. All you need is white vinegar, which can be bought from most supermarkets for around £2, and an empty spray bottle.
The man said: “We’re going to need two things to attack this mould. The first thing is white vinegar. You can get this from any supermarket for around £2. The second thing is an old spray bottle. Just make sure you wash it out so we’re not spraying around anything we shouldn’t.”
Step two of Neeson’s three-step plan is to “spray and lay”. This involves spritzing a “generous coating” of white vinegar on any mould around your home. He then recommends leaving it to sit for 60 minutes so the “vinegar can penetrate deep into the roots of the mould”.
The final step was simply to take some kitchen roll and use it to wipe or scrub away the mould. He added: “Don’t be surprised about how much mould comes off. Just make sure you bin it.”
Neeson also shared a “bonus tip” in which he said that if you have some “heavy staining” after you’ve cleaned off all the mould in your home, you can rub some diluted bleach over the affected area to remove it.
He even stated that the most important thing to remember is that mould is a “living organism”, so it will continue to grow if you don’t tackle it as soon as you spot it.
Commenters on the post thanked him for sharing his hack. Others pointed out the mould would likely “grow back” if preventative measures weren’t taken and shared some helpful advice for keeping mould at bay.
One person said: “Make sure to air out the area afterwards, as vinegar still has water in it! Also, put out a cup of baking soda to absorb the vinegar smell.”
Another added: “Prevention is better than a cure! Find the source of the cause, like lack of ventilation.”
