Whether going for a bold statement or a subtle refresh with a classic shade, the experts at DoorsDirect2U have shared some of their top tips to achieve the best finish when painting.
They explained: “If possible, take the door off its hinges.
“This allows you to work on it horizontally, which can be easier and helps prevent drops.
“Wipe down the door with a mild detergent to remove any dirt, grease or dust, allowing it to dry completely.”
If the door has been previously painted, lightly scuff the surface with a sanding sponge or fine-grit sandpaper.
According to the experts, this will help the new paint adhere to it.
Next, fill in any holes or imperfections with a wood filler before smoothing after it dries.
If you’re making a drastic colour change, make sure to now apply a primer to ensure even coverage.
The pros added: “Make sure to choose the right paint. Use a paint that’s specifically formulated for doors and trims, such as satinwood, semi-gloss or gloss.
“These finishes are durable and very easy to clean. Make sure to use the right tools too. A high-quality angled brush is great for panelled doors and hard-to-reach areas, while a foam roller can provide a smooth finish on flat surfaces.
“If you have a panelled door, paint the panels first. Then move onto the horizontal areas, and finish with the verticals.”
The paint pros said this method helps with paint levelling and minimises streaks.
When painting, it is better to do a couple of thin layers than one thick one. Thick coats are more likely to drop or create an uneven finish.
The experts noted: “Keep an eye out for paint drips, particularly in panel corners and along edges, smooth them out immediately.
“Be patient and let the paint dry fully between coats. If the paint isn’t completely dry, it may peel off or stick when you close the door.
“Once the door and all the hardware have thoroughly dried, reassemble everything carefully to not chip the fresh paint.”
