Grout is used to fill in the gaps and seal joints between tiles, and can be incredibly frustrating to clean if you do not know the best items to use.
Whitening grout can be a challenge as it is very porous, which means it can absorb dirt, grease and other spills that can penetrate beneath the surface and make it difficult to remove.
It is often recommended online to use bleach or vinegar to clean grout but it is not very effective as it can erode the material over time and make it more likely to stain in the future.
However, Sophie Franklin, a cleaning expert from Maid2Match has shared there is a better and more “straightforward” method for cleaning grout without even having to scrub it.
Sophie explained: “The easiest way to clean grout without scrubbing involves hydrogen peroxide and baking soda.”
Baking soda is abrasive while hydrogen peroxide has natural bleaching properties, and when combined they can create a paste which will both whiten and clean grout.
It is also useful to add a few squirts of dish soap as it contains surfactants which can break down grease, oil and soap if stuck in the grout and also make it easier to lift stains.
How to make a homemade cleaner to whiten grout
You will need:
- 120ml of baking soda
- 60ml of hydrogen peroxide
- A teaspoon of dish soap
- Clean cloth
Method
Place the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide in an empty container and mix until you have a paste. Then, add a tablespoon of dish soap.
Apply the mixture to the grout and leave it to sit for around five to 10 minutes. If the grout has not been cleaned in a while then wait a little while longer to make sure it thoroughly penetrates the grout build-up.
When the time is up, use a clean cloth to wipe off the mixture and rinse the floor or wall with warm water. Then, leave the grout to dry completely.
This natural and simple homemade cleaner will help clean your grout, but be careful when storing hydrogen peroxide as it can decompose over time, and can build up pressure if exposed to light or heat.
Sophie said: “Do not store excess cleaner in a sealed container. The build-up of carbon dioxide may cause the container to break, while the gas could be toxic.”
Make sure to either dispose of the cleaning solution after using it or store it in a cool and dark place with plenty of ventilation.
