How to whiten pillows with yellow stains without bleach

Pillow stains yellow in colour are typically caused by a combination of factors, including natural body oils and sweat that accumulate over time.

These substances can seep into the fabric of the pillowcase and pillow, creating unsightly discolouration.

Surprisingly, dust mites, allergens, and skin cells can all contribute to the nasty staining.

Even your chosen sleeping position can lead to more moisture build-up as those who sleep on their side or front are more likely to drool than back sleepers, increasing the likelihood of their pillows turning yellow.

Unfortunately, adding bleaching agents will not help clean your white pillowcases, and in some cases can make it worse.

Luckily, a cleaner has shared her tried and tested method that uses an item she now “can’t live without”.

Taking to the Mrs Hinch Army Cleaning Tips Facebook page, Anna Devlin posted a picture of a pillow completely soiled with yellow stains that it was hard to tell it was once white.

She said: “I took a gamble and put this manky pillow in the bath. Sprayed with Elbow Grease popped it in the washing machine and on a fast spin to help dry quicker!

“Didn’t expect for it to come out so clean. Can’t live without this stuff now. It’s a holy grail in my cleaning supplies.”

Anna shared a picture of the after results and the pillow was now back to its pristine white shade.

Another cleaning enthusiast claimed to use the same product to tackle this issue. Alison Platt said: “I use that on mine too! I spray them with Elbow Grease and put two pillows in the drum to help hold their shape on a very low spin.
