I’m a chef who loves air fryers – this is the best breakfast

Air fryers have become a home cook’s best friend over the recent years, making mealtimes a whole lot smoother for all the family. Chef Aefa Mulholland has also sung the praises of the appliances, too.

Aefa has worked in restaurants and hotels all over the world, from Scotland, Ireland, Australia and Canada. With all of her years of experience in the kitchen, traveling, and writing, Aefa detailed some of her much-loved recipes she cooks in her air fryer all the time. She described the air fryer as one of the “best kitchen hacks” around.

The appliance can be used for all types of cooking, including breakfast, the most important meal of the day.

Aefa wrote for Business Insider: “One of the most requested air-fried items in my house is based on a breakfast I cooked in Dublin that led to a half dozen dirty pots and pans.”

However, this recipe doesn’t require an endless rotation of pots and pans. All you need is your trusty air fryer and two ramekins.

You can create a hearty breakfast sandwich all at once in the air fryer. No need for the oven or multiple trays or saucepans.

Aefa’s recipe loads up a breakfast bun with bacon, egg, cheese, and sweet, caramelised onions. It combines salty with sweet for the ultimate breakfast sarnie.

Air fryer breakfast sandwich

Ingredients

  • One tbsp butter
  • One tbsp brown sugar
  • 40g chopped onions
  • One egg
  • One bread roll or bun
  • Few bacon rashers
  • Cheddar cheese, sliced

Method

Add the butter, brown sugar, and chopped onions to a ramekin and mix well. Oil a second ramekin and crack an egg into it.

Slice a bun and put it face down next to both ramekins in the air fryer. Carefully place a few rashers of bacon on a rack above the egg, if your air fryer has once. If your air fryer doesn’t have a rack, strategically place the bacon around the bread and ramekins.

Cook for three minutes, before turning over the buns. Top the buns with some slices of cheddar cheese.

Cook for a further seven minutes, or until egg and bacon are cooked to your liking. Pile the onions, egg, and bacon onto the bun and serve with sliced tomato or relish.
