Mashed potatoes are a favourite component of many meals but making them taste their best can be difficult. You might have tried adding a variety of things to your mash from butter to milk but if you’re looking to add flavour, there’s one ingredient that you can’t miss.
You want your mashed potatoes to be creamy, smooth and delicious but you don’t want to compromise on flavour. Luckily, there’s one item you can add, which you might not have experimented with yet, that’s an instant winner.
Epicurious says: “After extensive experimentation, we discovered our platonic potato ideal—mashers that are smooth and silky, never heavy and gluey; fluffy as a cloud with a hint of garlic, thyme, and a secret flavor-boosting weapon: tangy sour cream.”
Using tangy sour cream will elevate the taste of your spuds.
To make the perfect potatoes, you should use either Maris Pipers or King Edwards spuds.
You should first wash and peel the potatoes and cut into even sized chunks.
Next, you should put the potatoes in a large pan of water over a high heat, add a pinch of salt and bring to the boil, says BBC.
Make sure to boil them for 10–15 minutes, until the potatoes are tender but still a little firm. When you can break the potatoes with a fork or cut them easily with a knife, they’re done.
Once you’ve drained the potatoes, you should leave them for five minutes. Drain in a colander, and leave for five minutes to prevent the mash getting soggy.
Meanwhile, you can melt a tablespoon of butter and 50ml of whole milk in a pan over a low heat, until combined. Add the potato and mash with a potato masher, until smooth.
The more you mash, the fluffier and lighter the potatoes will become. Add more milk for a creamier mash.
Once your mash is perfectly combined and all the lumps are gone, add your tangy sour cream. You can add as much or as little as you like depending on how strong you want the flavour to be.
Add a sprinkle of salt and pepper and serve with your meal. By adding this one item to your mash, you’ll be able to ensure it will be even tatsier than usual.
