Rebecca Swain, mattress expert at Winstons Beds, said: “Yellow stains are foul, repulsive and disgusting, but unfortunately it’s a normal occurrence when it comes to beds.
“Sweating during the night can’t be helped so it’s important to give the mattress a clean otherwise you run the risk of ruining it and making the bed unhygienic to sleep on.
“Try using items such as white vinegar, washing up liquid and even limes, which only cost 24p per fruit.
“Make sure to give the mattress a deep clean once a month to prevent the problem from returning.”
1. Limes
The citric acid in limes makes them great for cleaning yellow stains on mattresses.
Simply squeeze the juice directly onto stains and wipe it down with hot, soapy water.
2. White vinegar
The expert recommended using a quarter cup of white vinegar with three parts distilled water, mixing to create an “effective” cleaning solution.
Use a sponge to soak up the mixture and scrub this directly onto the stains.
It is important not to make the surface too wet though, otherwise, it can cause internal dampness.
3. Baking soda
The expert said: “Sprinkle the substance onto the material and leave it to set for an hour.
“After it’s settled, scrub the stains again for better results. The baking soda should help lift the stains from deeper crevices of the mattress.”
4. Lemon juice
A mixture of two tablespoons of lemon juice with some baking soda can help to create a fizzy solution great for banishing stains.
It can also help to leave a refreshing citrus smell on the mattress and in the bedroom.
5. Washing up liquid
Most of the time, washing up liquid with some hot water can clean almost anything.
Simply add a little washing liquid into the water and dab this onto the stains, gently scrubbing.
The pro noted: “It’s an effective way to banish unwanted stains and will help to remove the musty scent.”
