UPDATE: Confirming earlier rumours, the Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially unveiled by Nintendo.
In a new hardware trailer that you can see below, the Nintendo Switch 2 console appears to be bigger than the current model, featuring improved Joy-Cons, a more flexible kickstand and backwards compatibility.
Sadly, however, it’s not all good news because while it will play old Switch cartridges and digital games, some titles won’t work with the device.
Likewise, fans will have to wait until April to see more from the device, including new games, pre-order info and an exact release date.
Nintendo has confirmed plans to hold a Switch 2 dedicated Nintendo Direct on April 2.
Furthermore, fans will be able to go hands-on with the console during special events taking place around the world during April and May.
For UK fans, a Switch 2 Experience event be held from April 11 until April 13.
Indeed, according to The Verge, Nintendo will announce the Direct/Trailer on January 15, followed by the broadcast on January 16.
Based on previous reports, the console itself will have a May/June release date, which means it will be available in time for the summer holidays.
The January 16 reveal will reportedly focus on the hardware, which means fans can expect another Direct conference showcasing some of the games in the coming weeks.
It was recently claimed that Final Fantasy 7 Remake and FF7 Rebirth are in development for Nintendo Switch 2, while Metroid Prime 4 is expected to launch as a cross-platform game on the original Switch and Switch 2.
A new Mario Kart game is reportedly in development, while a 3D Super Mario also seems likely.
As for the Nintendo Switch 2, the console is also said to have some additional functionality compared to the current console.
The Joy-con controllers will reportedly feature magnetic hall effect joysticks, which should eliminate stick drift.
The console will allegedly launch in dark grey, although further colours may also be available.
According to previous leaks, the Switch 2 is reportedly larger than the current model, with a smaller bezel for more screen space.
