People only just realising how to use neglected side of a cheese grater

A mother’s “creative” use of a cheese grater has left some people positively amazed, while others can’t quite wrap their heads around it. A cheese grater is a household essential for many and it boasts multiple uses – it can, as expected, grate but it can also shred, zest and slice.

One mum has caused a stir among millions of people online after sharing a controversial way to make use of one side of a cheese grater. Jen Watson, a professional home organiser and mother-of-five, regularly takes to social media to share her insight on a range of lifestyle hacks, detailing tips in a bid to help others.

The organising guru shares advice on a wide array of topics, from the “best way to roll a towel” to the importance of cleaning out dryer filters and air vents to prevent a potential house fire.

In one phenomenally popular video, the mum shared her inventive approach to using the slicing side of a cheese grater.

Typically used to divide blocks of cheese and other soft produce into slices, Jen was able to make potato spirals by driving a skewer through a potato and then placing the end of the skewer into the slicing compartment, before rotating the potato as she pushes it through the grater.

Potatoes are endlessly versatile and spirals are an incredibly popular iteration of the food item. They have many different names and are sometimes called potato twisters, chips on a stick, rotato potato, potato swirl, spiral potato, tornado fries and more.

In her video, Jen can be seen twisting the potato to get the desired shape. Once the potato has been fully twisted through the slicer and is in the middle of the cheese grater sans skewer, Jen removes it and then reuses the skewer to pierce and keep the potato intact.

In the caption accompanying the demonstrative clip, Jen penned: “Did you know? Use the side of the grater to create spirals.” Over the top of the footage, she added: “In case you ever wondered what that side piece was for”.

So far, the video has amassed more than 270K likes and 14.8 million views. In the comments section, hundreds of people were keen to share their thoughts, with many praising Jen’s ingenuity while others were perplexed by the method.

One person confessed: “I’ve watched the video [four times] and I still don’t understand how it comes out like that”.

Jen explained: “Once you’re at the end, pull out the skewer, shake out the potato then stick it (the skewer) back in.”

Someone else disputed Jen’s use of the cheese grater but remained impressed nonetheless. They said: “It’s actually for creating simple slices of course – cheese mainly, but could also be veg. But what an imaginative use! Congrats for your creativity!”

Another Instagram user commented: “Stop, you’re scaring me. Does this actually work cause my husband is gonna love this hack”.

And another said: “It’s meant for slicing cheese but what an awesome use.”

Someone else joked: “It’s actually for cutting your hand in a way you’ll never emotionally recover from”.
