Warmer weather comes with long sunny days back garden barbeques and less charmingly – insects invading your home. If you suffer with flies and other bugs making your home their home then you’re in luck because pest control expert Jonathan Nicholls at HomeHow.co.uk has shared his top tips on how to stop pests from flying into your place.
One of Jonathan’s tips will not only hinder insects from entering your property, but can add a burst of colour to your home as well. He recommends planting certain things in pots around your doors and windows that can dissuade insects from crossing the threshold. He said: “Try lavender, marigolds and nasturtiums as well as herbs like basil, rosemary, sage and lemon balm, which naturally contains citronella.
“Not only will you have an attractive insect repellent around your house but your home will have a very pleasant fragrance. You’ll also have fresh herbs for your kitchen.”
As well as planting these, it’s important to try and keep your doors and windows closed where practical. If it’s too hot to keep the house closed, then consider investing in mesh screens for your doors and windows that will stop bugs in their tracks.
Jonathan said: “If you want to keep your windows and doors open in good weather, there are many different insect screens available for various openings.
“These range from stick on screens that you can do yourself to professionally fitted models. Obviously, the amount you’re prepared to spend and how effective you want the insect screen to be, will influence your choice.”
Another way to minimise bugs is to move your outdoor bins away from your house. Where space is limited, consider a bin storage area that will provide an extra layer of protection from insects.
Jonathan said: “The odours coming from the bins can attract flies and other insects from quite a distance, sometimes miles away.
“Even if they can’t access the bins, they can enter your home through any nearby open windows. It’s also advisable to regularly wash out your bins, particularly if a bin bag has spilled its contents inside.”
