Sanlam takes 23% stake in Shriram AMC with ₹105 crore investment

Sanlam, which manages $80 billion in assets globally, extends a 20-year business relationship with the Shriram Group that spans financing, life insurance, and general insurance

South African asset manager Sanlam has acquired a 23 per cent stake in Shriram Asset Management Company through a ₹105 crore equity infusion, becoming a co-promoter of India’s first listed AMC. The investment was made through Sanlam Emerging Markets (Mauritius) Ltd via preferential allotment of 38.89 lakh equity shares.

The partnership increases total promoter shareholding in Shriram AMC from 62.55 per cent to 71.17 per cent, with Sanlam joining existing promoter Shriram Credit Company Ltd. Sanlam will gain board representation as the company restructures its governance.

Sanlam, which manages $80 billion in assets globally, extends a 20-year business relationship with the Shriram Group that spans financing, life insurance, and general insurance. The investment aims to enhance Shriram AMC’s “quantamental” investment approach, combining quantitative analysis with fundamental research.

“This partnership will strengthen our strategy covering performance, products and placement,” said Kartik Jain, MD & CEO of Shriram AMC. Sanlam CEO Carl Roothman described India as a “strategic growth market” for the company.

The deal builds on Mission1 Investments’ 23 per cent stake acquisition in Shriram AMC in 2022. The partnership targets expansion of product innovation and talent acquisition in India’s growing mutual fund sector.
