The easy tip to make your towels fresh and fluffy at home

If you’re hoping to make your towels as soft as the ones in hotels, there’s a simple thing you could be doing wrong which is making your towels rough.

Having soft towels makes all the difference when you’re hopping out of the shower at home.

If your towels are dry and have become scratchy over the years, it could be for a simple reason.

According to Good Housekeeping, you should make sure you’re not overdoing the detergent or conditioner.

It might be tempting to put more fabric softener in if your towels are getting rough, but too much product can actually make matters worse.

Katarzyna Kurylek, head of laundry at the London Hilton, told Good Housekeeping: “Always make sure you’re using just the right amount of conditioner to prevent depleting quality.”

She said fabric conditioner can improve softness and make towels smell fresh but overusing it can cause towel fibres to lose their absorbency.

Too much detergent can also dry out towels and leave them feeling stiff and crunchy from the excess residue.

You should also make sure to check the labels on your towels to make sure you’re washing them correctly.

If you have had your towels for years, then it could be time to get some new ones.

When your towel is no longer drying as well as it used to or it has become rough to the touch then this is the main sign you should replace them.

You should replace your towels every two to three years to ensure they stay fresh, absorbent and soft.

Towels are more likely to go hard if they’re made from low-quality fabric or double-ply loop yarn is used, so it pays to invest in good-quality cotton.

Another tip is to make sure you are washing your towels at the right temperature. Your default may be to always wash at 60C, but this isn’t always necessary. Some bacterial spores and viruses are, in any case, resistant to being washed at 60C, says Which Magazine.
